Stara Planina divides Bulgaria into North and South. It is part of the Stara Planina chain, which includes Stara Planina and the Fore-Balkans. The name of the mountain is of Thracian origin. The oldest names are Haimon, Haimos, Hemus, which mean - ridge, border. The highest peak of Stara Planina is Botev - 2376 m. From the mountain spring the rivers: Lom, Ogosta, Yantra, Rusenski Lom, Kamchia. The total area of the mountain is 11 596 sq. Km. The average altitude of the whole chain is 722 m. The climate is temperate continental, except for the easternmost parts, which are subject to transitional continental influence.
